I always eagerly anticipate Saffron Kent’s newest release and I am so happy to be sharing my review of California Dreaming’ today. This book is the ultimate book for fans of her Heartstone series and it was so fun meeting up with these characters again. Thank you to Wildfire Marketing for gifting me a copy of this book (and providing the fun graphics included in this post) in exchange for my honest review.
Everyone thinks Dean Collins is too old for Fallon Blackwood. Her parents, her friends, even Dean himself.
In fact, he wants her to date guys her own age. But Fallon doesn’t care about that.
All she cares about is that she can’t take his eyes off Dean, her neighbor, her best friend, the guy who taught her to ride a bike and to climb trees.
All she cares about is that sometimes Dean can’t take his eyes off her, either. And that sometimes he looks at her like he wants to kiss her.
So it doesn’t matter that he’s thirty-two and she’s eighteen.
All that matters is that they belong with each other, and she needs to convince him of that.
Good thing they’re taking a cross-country road trip together, right?
California to New York; three thousand miles and a love story in the making…

**This is a STANDALONE NOVELLA. It was released as a part of Mixtape Anthology. Since then, it has been revised and expanded and re-titled.

This was a fun short collection of stories wrapped up in a novella featuring characters from Saffron Kent’s Heartstone Series. The main couple that we follow in this story is Fallon (who is the daughter of the couple from the Medicine Man) and Dean who she has been in love with since she was 3 and he was 17. Fallon and Dean have the classic Kent romance which means that it is angst ridden, obviously age gap and forbidden, as well as very possessive. These romances are just fun to read and I am a huge fan of them.
We also got to see glimpses of our heroines from the previous two Heartstone series books and I thought that was a nice touch. They mostly served as background for people who aren’t already familiar with these characters but it was just heartwarming to see these beloved characters again. I also really loved that at the end of the book we got to see the start of another Heartstone romance between Fallon’s brother, Brendan, and Rosie (the daughter of the couple from the Dreams of 18). They were so cute together and I hope that we get to see a lot more of them (and all these couples!) in the future.
With that being said, I wasn’t really the biggest fan of how similar the kids’ romances were to their parents. Dean and Fallon are so similar to Willow and Simon that I was left wanting more. I wish there had been an element that separated them more so they weren’t so interchangeable. Which isn’t to say they are exactly the same but they do closely parallel each other. The same thing also happened with Rosie and Brendan where they were almost an exact copy of Violet and Graham. Again, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing since I enjoyed their romance but I wish we could have seen something different.
