WWW Wednesday 9/30

I can’t believe that it is the last day of September! Every month since March feels like it takes eons to get through but this month in particular felt loooonng. I started the month off in a slump but the past week I have really seen a reemergence of my reading and I have been flying through books. These WWW posts are some of my favorite to read and I’m excited that I have finally been reading enough to join in again!

To participate in this fun weekly meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words all you need to do is answer the following three questions:

-What are you currently reading?

-What did you recently finish reading?

-What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

I’m about halfway through this harrowing and heartbreaking read. Chanel Miller has such a gift for words and really putting the reader into her head. Chanel is a rape survivor and this memoir is her account of the events of that day and all the events that followed through the trial and the despicable sentence that her rapist got. This book should be required reading in all high schools and college because she paints such a vivid image of what it is like and what it means to be a survivor.

What did you recently finish reading?

Buzzwordathon Wrap Up

I will be talking more about The Deep in my September wrap up coming this Saturday but I really enjoyed this one. It is such a creative way to show generational trauma and I really love how the backstory behind how this novella came to be. It took me three weeks to read the first half of this 176 page book but once I broke through my slump I read the last half in less than a day.

What do you think you’ll read next?

In October, I will be participating in THREE readathons, which I will be sharing in my TBR tomorrow but I’m waiting until I finish reading Know Your Name to choose which book of that stack that I will be reading. However, the Victober Goodreads group that I am a part of is buddy reading Shirley all month long. I read Jane Eyre (which I’m also hoping to read next month) way back in high school so I barely remember the story but I do remember loving it. I have had Shirley on my shelves for so long I don’t even remember where I got it, other than a used bookstore, so I am excited to have a reason to finally get into it.

Thank you so much Harlequin for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. They also kindly provided all info and graphics.

CONFESSIONS ON THE 7:45

Author: Lisa Unger

ISBN:    9780778310150

Publication Date: October 6, 2020

Publisher: Park Row Books

BOOK SUMMARY:

Bestselling and award-winning author Lisa Unger returns with her best novel yet. Reminiscent of the classic Strangers on a Train, Confessions on the 7:45 is a riveting psychological thriller that begins with a chance encounter on a commuter train and shows why you should never, ever make conversation with strangers.

Be careful who you tell your darkest secrets…

Selena Murphy is commuting home from her job in the city when the train stalls out on the tracks. She strikes up a conversation with a beautiful stranger in the next seat, and their connection is fast and easy. The woman introduces herself as Martha and confesses that she’s been stuck in an affair with her boss. Selena, in turn, confesses that she suspects her husband is sleeping with the nanny. When the train arrives at Selena’s station, the two women part ways, presumably never to meet again.

But days later, Selena’s nanny disappears.

Soon Selena finds her once-perfect life upended. As she is pulled into the mystery of the missing nanny, and as the fractures in her marriage grow deeper, Selena begins to wonder, who was Martha really? But she is hardly prepared for what she’ll discover.

Expertly plotted and reminiscent of the timeless classic Strangers on a Train, Confessions on the 7:45 is a stunning web of lies and deceit, and a gripping thriller about the delicate facades we create around our lives.

Review

This is a very enthralling and well plotted out book but, unfortunately, it didn’t quite reach my expectations. The story was bogged down by a lot of preachy societal commentary about how people falsely present themselves on Instagram, toxic men, well, really, just men in general. While all of that can definitely be true at times, I didn’t appreciate how much it took over the story. It felt like anytime the story really got going the plot was paused to add in more unnecessary commentary. I love when mystery/thrillers have multiple narrators but another aspect of this story that dragged it down was when we inexplicably got more viewpoints. The only thing that they seemed to add was to the author’s commentary and not much plot wise. I feel like this book could have been streamlined to make the pacing faster and everything feel more immediate.

The book starts with four main narrators and I really connected with Anne. She is such a complex, shifty character and I really appreciated what she brought to the story. Another character that I mostly enjoyed was Serena, although she had major moments where I just wanted to shake her. Serena reminds me a lot of the characters that I used to read a lot of back 5-6 years ago. Where the woman is such a mess and makes excuses for her life instead of just owning that her choices put her where she is.

However, despite all that, I found the story so captivating that I read this book in about 24 hours. The plot was predictable but I still really enjoyed seeing everything come together. I also really enjoyed the ending and Unger wrapped things up perfectly. If you love domestic thrillers then I think this book could be one that you really enjoy. I know that there were aspects of this story that I didn’t like but there was also something about that kept me engaged and thinking about it. So, for that reason, I will be trying some of Unger’s backlist to see if I fare any better with those stories.

Buzzwordathon Wrap Up + Life Update

I did it! I broke my reading slump (insert praise hands). The biggest reason in that after ten months of searching for answers I was finally given a diagnosis and the relief I feel at not only knowing what I have, but also having a plan in place if/when I have another attack is so reassuring. I feel like I can breathe and there is a huge weight that has been lifted off of me. I was diagnosed with MOG myelitis or MOGAD which is a rare neuroimmune disease that is like a cousin to MS but with a better prognosis. Unfortunately, I have already had two attacks since I got sick, so my doctors feel like it is likely I will have another, but like I said, we have already come up with a plan for if that happens. My biggest obstacle right now is to work with a physical therapist to hopefully regain as much of my mobility back as possible, but really I’m going to try hard for 100% recovery! Now that I have this huge stress of not knowing off my back, I will probably not be mentioning it as much here since books are such a safe and happy place for me and it is good for my mental health to have an escape. But if you are wanting to know more about what exactly MOG is I will link my Instagram here where I have a bunch of info saved in a story highlight on my profile. I also just want to say a huge thank you for all of your kind words and thoughts over the course of this journey. I am so grateful for this community and it has been a big source of comfort to me.

The second reason that my slump broke is that I read one of my favorite books of the year for the buzzwordathon and ever since I have finished it I have been back to reading like crazy. On the other side of that, the only other book I read for this readathon is one of my least favorite of the year. But I have still kept up my reading so I feel confident in saying that I am officially out of my slump!

Rating: 4.5/5

This is one of the best mysteries I have read this year. It can be a slippery slope to preachy when the plot is centered around a topical societal issue but Goldin really incorporated the whole idea of rape culture seamlessly into her story. The Night Swim follows popular podcaster, Rachel, who has traveled to a small coastal town to cover the rape trial of high schooler, K, by popular Olympic hopeful, Scott Blair. This story is also paralleled by a possible murder that was committed twenty five years ago. The pacing of this book was fantastic and the dual timelines and narrators really built the suspense up as we got deeper into the story. Besides being a really great mystery, this book is also a scathing commentary on how society views and treats rape victims. Why is rape the only crime where it is the victim’s fault that it happened? This book is equal parts infuriating and heartbreaking. And the whole thing is anchored by a solid mystery that is just as captivating. The ending was predictable but also suspenseful and was a solid way to end the book. I was talking about this book on Instagram and someone commented and said that this would be a great start to a series and while I had never thought about it before, I have to agree. If you are familiar with the Brock Turner case than this story will feel very similar to you and since I had coincidentally put Chanel Miller’s Know My Name on my September TBR I decided to pick it up today. Miller is the one who was raped by Brock Turner and it felt like the best way to move on from this topic would be to spend my time reading from a survivor. I highly recommend The Night Swim but please be aware of the difficult topic before starting. It will make you angry but it also important that we keep talking about the disgusting way that women are treated. Not only in regards to rape culture but also just in everyday life.

Rating: 2.5/5

I am sorry to say that this is my first Kristin Hannah since I really didn’t like this book. The premise could have been interesting but it was really bogged down by poor pacing, terrible characters, and a nonsensical plot line. The first part of this story takes place in 2004 when the teenagers of the story are seniors in High School which also happened to be the same year that I graduated. And I didn’t connect with them at all. There was also a weird thing where everyone was so convinced that because these kids are now seniors that they were going to start going to parties where alcohol was involved. If that was what they were going to do they wouldn’t just start because they are seniors. It was very off putting and along with the pacing of the first half it just left me bewildered. This is supposed to be an emotional read but because I didn’t connect to anything with the story until the last 50 pages I didn’t tear up once, which is pretty rare for me. I am a big crier in books, movies, tv shows, commercials, basically anything and this book left me feeling so empty for the majority of it. And Jude. She makes zero sense as a character and I failed to believe anything she felt or did was believable. Overall, this was a big miss for me but I did give it an extra half a star because it did start to touch my emotionally toward the end. Although, the ending was irritating and left me feeling annoyed that the author had wrapped it up like that. I have heard that this is Hannah’s least popular book so I will definitely be trying another one of hers before I decide if she is an author for me or not. Another plus for Hannah is that I did write down a couple of quotes that I resonated with me.

“She’d grown up on a diet of lies; she knew the bitter taste they left in your mouth.”

“A girl without a mother was a prisoner of a different kind.”

The extraordinary true story and basis for the major motion picture BlacKkKlansman, written and directed by Spike Lee, produced by Jordan Peele, and starring John David Washington and Adam Driver.

When detective Ron Stallworth, the first black detective in the history of the Colorado Springs Police Department, comes across a classified ad in the local paper asking for all those interested in joining the Ku Klux Klan to contact a P.O. box, Detective Stallworth does his job and responds with interest, using his real name while posing as a white man. He figures he’ll receive a few brochures in the mail, maybe even a magazine, and learn more about a growing terrorist threat in his community.

A few weeks later the office phone rings, and the caller asks Ron a question he thought he’d never have to answer, “Would you like to join our cause?” This is 1978, and the KKK is on the rise in the United States. Its Grand Wizard, David Duke, has made a name for himself, appearing on talk shows, and major magazine interviews preaching a “kinder” Klan that wants nothing more than to preserve a heritage, and to restore a nation to its former glory.

Ron answers the caller’s question that night with a yes, launching what is surely one of the most audacious, and incredible undercover investigations in history. Ron recruits his partner Chuck to play the “white” Ron Stallworth, while Stallworth himself conducts all subsequent phone conversations. During the months-long investigation, Stallworth sabotages cross burnings, exposes white supremacists in the military, and even befriends David Duke himself.

Black Klansman is an amazing true story that reads like a crime thriller, and a searing portrait of a divided America and the extraordinary heroes who dare to fight back.

On My Radar: October 2020

I can’t believe that we are already at the end of September! I’m back today to share what books have caught my eye that are coming out next month. October is obviously the spookiest time of the year and there are quite a few of my most anticipated thrillers/mysteries coming out. Along with some other good books as well if you aren’t as into those genres. As always, I have organized them by release date but those can change although I feel like the publishing world has pretty much settled back down in this Covid world.

October 1

Polly, long estranged from Norah, is running from her own troubles. Down the street, Bess, once Norah’s best friend, desperately tries to hide secrets while Casey, Bess’s daughter, flees college after a traumatic event, only to find that home isn’t the safe haven she expected. And Nico, the detective who has doggedly pursued Norah Ramsey in hopes that she will lead him to his missing brother, is drawn further into these women’s lives while facing his own domestic disturbance.

Scandal has brought each of them to a crossroads. Now, as they delve into Norah’s secrets, they must come to terms with secrets of their own—ones that still have the power to hurt or to heal.

Their red-hot reunion

is off the charts!

They made passionate music together.

A Life No One Will Remember. A Story You Will Never Forget.

France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

A murder on the high seas. A detective duo. A demon who may or may not exist.

It’s 1634 and Samuel Pipps, the world’s greatest detective, is being transported to Amsterdam to be executed for a crime he may, or may not, have committed. Travelling with him is his loyal bodyguard, Arent Hayes, who is determined to prove his friend innocent.

But no sooner are they out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage. A twice-dead leper stalks the decks. Strange symbols appear on the sails. Livestock is slaughtered.

And then three passengers are marked for death, including Samuel.

Could a demon be responsible for their misfortunes?

With Pipps imprisoned, only Arent can solve a mystery that connects every passenger onboard. A mystery that stretches back into their past and now threatens to sink the ship, killing everybody on board.

The breathtaking new novel from Stuart Turton, author of the The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, winner of the Costa Best First Novel Award.

One Christmas wish, two brothers, and a lifetime of hope are on the line for hapless Maelyn Jones in In a Holidaze, the quintessential holiday romantic novel by Christina Lauren, the New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions.

But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favorite place in the world—the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born, along with two other beloved families. Mentally melting down as she drives away from the cabin for the final time, Mae throws out what she thinks is a simple plea to the universe: Please. Show me what will make me happy.

The next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

Jam-packed with yuletide cheer, an unforgettable cast of characters, and Christina Lauren’s trademark “downright hilarious” (Helen Hoang, author of The Bride Test) hijinks, this swoon-worthy romantic read will make you believe in the power of wishes and the magic of the holidays.

From master of suspense Lisa Unger comes a riveting thriller about a chance encounter that unravels a stunning web of lies and deceit.

Everyone has a secret… Now she knows yours.

Expertly plotted and reminiscent of the timeless classic Strangers on a TrainConfessions on the 7:45 is a gripping thriller about the delicate facades we create around our lives

A young woman discovers a strange portal in her uncle’s house, leading to madness and terror in this gripping new novel from the author of the “innovative, unexpected, and absolutely chilling” (Mira Grant, Nebula Awardwinning author) The Twisted Ones.

Pray they are hungry.

Kara finds these words in the mysterious bunker that she’s discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle’s house. Freshly divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic words and starts exploring the peculiar bunker—only to discover that it holds portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures that seem to hear thoughts…and the more you fear them, the stronger they become.

With her distinctive “delightfully fresh and subversive” (SF Bluestocking) prose and the strange, sinister wonder found in Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s LabyrinthThe Hollow Places is another compelling and white-knuckled horror novel that you won’t be able to put down.

From bestselling author Jillian Cantor comes a smart, edgy update of Jane Austen’s beloved classic Emma.

Emma Woodhouse is a genius at math, but clueless about people. After all, people are unreliable. They let you down—just like Emma’s sister, Izzy, did this year, when she moved to California for college. But numbers…those you can count on. (No pun intended.)

Emma’s senior year is going to be all about numbers, and seeing how far they can take her. When she and George, her Coding Club co-president, are tasked with brainstorming a new project, The Code for Love is born—a matchmaking app that goes far beyond swiping, using algorithms to calculate compatibility. George disapproves of Emma’s idea, accusing her of meddling in people’s lives. But all the happy new couples at school are proof that the app works. At least at first.

Emma’s code is flawless. So why is it that perfectly matched couples start breaking up, the wrong people keep falling for each other and her own feelings defy any algorithm? Emma thought math could solve everything. But there’s nothing more complex—or unpredictable—than love.

A hitched ride home in a snow storm turns sinister when one of the passengers is plotting for the ride to end in disaster.

When Mira flies home to spend Christmas with her mother in Pittsburgh, a record-breaking blizzard results in a cancelled layover. Desperate to get to her grief-ridden mother in the wake of a family death, Mira hitches a ride with a group of friendly college kids who were on her initial flight.

As the drive progresses and weather conditions become more treacherous, Mira realizes that the four other passengers she’s stuck in the car with don’t actually know one another.

Soon, they’re not just dealing with heavy snowfall and ice-slick roads, but the fact that somebody will stop at nothing to ensure their trip ends in a deadly disaster.

October 13

In the aftermath of Headmaster Boddy’s murder, Blackbrook Academy has been thrown into complete disarray. Half the student body hasn’t bothered to return to campus—but those who have include Orchid, Vaughn, Scarlett, Peacock, Plum, and Mustard, now warily referred to by the other students as the Murder Crew. When another staff member is found dead and an anonymous threat begins to target the group, each of the teens’ opportunistic reasons for sticking around come to light. Orchid’s identity comes under question while Vaughn’s family life takes a turn; Finn and Mustard grow closer; and Scarlett and Beth struggle to turn over new leaves. All of this comes to a dramatic head at Tudor House with a cliff-hanger…

The author of the “rich, dark, and intricately twisted” (Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author) The Family Upstairs returns with another taut and white-knuckled thriller following a group of people whose lives shockingly intersect when a young woman disappears.

Owen Pick’s life is falling apart.

In his thirties, a virgin, and living in his aunt’s spare bedroom, he has just been suspended from his job as a geography teacher after accusations of sexual misconduct, which he strongly denies. Searching for professional advice online, he is inadvertently sucked into the dark world of incel—involuntary celibate—forums, where he meets the charismatic, mysterious, and sinister Bryn.

Across the street from Owen lives the Fours family, headed by mom Cate, a physiotherapist, and dad Roan, a child psychologist. But the Fours family have a bad feeling about their neighbor Owen. He’s a bit creepy and their teenaged daughter swears he followed her home from the train station one night.

Meanwhile, young Saffyre Maddox spent three years as a patient of Roan Fours. Feeling abandoned when their therapy ends, she searches for other ways to maintain her connection with him, following him in the shadows and learning more than she wanted to know about Roan and his family. Then, on Valentine’s night, Saffyre Maddox disappears—and the last person to see her alive is Owen Pick.

With evocative, vivid, and unputdownable prose and plenty of disturbing twists and turns, Jewell’s latest thriller is another “haunting, atmospheric, stay-up-way-too-late read” (Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author).

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of I Owe You One, an utterly delightful novel about a woman who ditches her dating app for a writer’s retreat in Italy–only to find that real love comes with its own filters

“As close to perfect as romantic comedies get.”–Jenny Colgan, New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner

Call Ava romantic, but she thinks love should be found in the real world, not on apps that filter men by height, job, or astrological sign. She believes in feelings, not algorithms. So after a recent breakup and dating app debacle, she decides to put love on hold and escapes to a remote writers’ retreat in coastal Italy. She’s determined to finish writing the novel she’s been fantasizing about, even though it means leaving her close-knit group of friends and her precious dog, Harold, behind.

At the retreat, she’s not allowed to use her real name or reveal any personal information. When the neighboring martial arts retreat is canceled and a few of its attendees join their small writing community, Ava, now going by “Aria,” meets “Dutch,” a man who seems too good to be true. The two embark on a baggage-free, whirlwind love affair, cliff-jumping into gem-colored Mediterranean waters and exploring the splendor of the Italian coast. Things seem to be perfect for Aria and Dutch.

But then their real identities–Ava and Matt–must return to London. As their fantasy starts to fade, they discover just how different their personal worlds are. From food choices to annoying habits to sauna etiquette . . . are they compatible in anything? And then there’s the prickly situation with Matt’s ex-girlfriend, who isn’t too eager to let him go. *I have already read The Tea Dragon Tapestry but I wanted to promo its release again. I think it’s the perfect conclusion to the trilogy and I gave it 5 stars.

Join Greta and Minette once more for the heartwarming conclusion of the award-winning Tea Dragon series!

Over a year since being entrusted with Ginseng’s care, Greta still can’t chase away the cloud of mourning that hangs over the timid Tea Dragon. As she struggles to create something spectacular enough to impress a master blacksmith in search of an apprentice, she questions the true meaning of crafting, and the true meaning of caring for someone in grief. Meanwhile, Minette receives a surprise package from the monastery where she was once training to be a prophetess. Thrown into confusion about her path in life, the shy and reserved Minette finds that the more she opens her heart to others, the more clearly she can see what was always inside.

Told with the same care and charm as the previous installments of the Tea Dragon series, The Tea Dragon Tapestry welcomes old friends and new into a heartfelt story of purpose, love, and growth.

A hacktivist and a cat café owner decode the friend zone in this romantic comedy from the author of Undercover Bromance.

Alexis Carlisle and her cat café, ToeBeans, have shot to fame after she came forward as a victim of a celebrity chef’s sexual harassment. When a new customer approaches to confide in her, the last thing Alexis expects is for the woman to claim they’re sisters. Unsure what to do, Alexis turns to the only man she trusts—her best friend, Noah Logan.

Computer genius Noah left his rebellious teenage hacker past behind to become a computer security expert. Now he only uses his old skills for the right cause. But Noah’s got a secret: He’s madly in love with Alexis. When she asks for his help, he wonders if the timing will ever be right to confess his crush.

Noah’s pals in The Bromance Book Club are more than willing to share their beloved “manuals” to help him go from bud to boyfriend. But he must decide if telling the truth is worth risking the best friendship he’s ever had.

Morrigan Crow and her friends have survived their first year as proud scholars of the elite Wundrous Society, helped bring down the nefarious Ghastly Market, and proven themselves loyal to Unit 919. Now Morrigan faces a new, exciting challenge: to master the mysterious Wretched Arts of the Accomplished Wundersmith, and control the power that threatens to consume her.

Meanwhile, a strange and frightening illness has taken hold of Nevermoor, turning infected Wunimals into mindless, vicious Unnimals on the hunt. As victims of the Hollowpox multiply, panic spreads. There are whispers – growing louder every day – that this catastrophe can only be the work of the Wundersmith, Ezra Squall.

But inside the walls of Wunsoc, everyone knows there is a new Wundersmith – one who’s much closer to home. With Nevermoor in a state of fear and the truth about Morrigan threatening to get out, the city she loves becomes the most perilous place in the world. Morrigan must try to find a cure for the Hollowpox, but it will put her – and everyone in Nevermoor – in more danger than she could have imagined.

Darling Rose Gold by Stephanie Wrobel

Published: March 17, 2020

Publisher: Berkley

Pages: 320

Genre: Psychological thriller

Rating: 5/5

This insidious story follows a dual timeline with dual mother and daughter narrators. Rose Gold begins her story right after her mother, Patty, has been convicted of child abuse for poisoning Rose Gold to gain sympathy and attention for taking care of a sick child. Patty’s story picks up on her last day of prison as she waits for Rose Gold to pick her up. Immediately, the reader is confronted with the question of what would motivate Rose Gold to continue to be in her mother’s life and why is she the one who volunteers to take her in?

This story is obviously inspired by the infamous Gyspy Rose Blanchard case but Wrobel does an incredible job of turning an already hideous and familiar story into one even more devious. The pacing and formatting were perfectly crafted to build the story up to a cunning finale. Rose Gold is trying to make a life for herself after being kept in a bubble by her mother for her entire life and this juxtaposition of her in the past versus how she is around Patty five years later kept me captivated. There is such a gap between those two timelines and as we get closer to merging them together I was floored by the depths that Wrobel takes the story.

It was interesting, to say the least, being in Patty’s head. She has such a warped way of looking at the world that I almost enjoyed reading her narrative because I wanted to see what she would be thinking/doing next. I really liked that Wrobel used Patty to tell the story in the present day because it not only helped give a complete story but it also made Rose Gold’s parts more impactful and suspenseful.

If you are looking for something to read during the upcoming spooky season then I highly recommend this sinister psychological thriller. I went into it thinking it was just a contemporary and I was pleasantly surprised that it was so much more. I am blown away that this is Wrobel’s debut novel and I am eagerly anticipating what she comes up with next.

Blog Tour: Alaskan Christmas Redemption

Thank you to Harlequin for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. They also kindly provided all graphics and info.

Book description

Some secrets are meant to be shared.

Before he gives his heart…

he’ll have to forgive himself.

Returning to Owl Creek after years away, Braden North’s determined to help his best friend, Piper Miller, save her failing diner. But as they work to revitalize her business, Braden’s convinced he must hide the truth about a tragedy from their past…or risk losing Piper for good. If he can find the courage, might telling her everything make this Christmas a time for healing and forgiveness?

Review

This is a super cute, obviously tame Christian Christmas romance (say that ten times fast!). The characters, Braden and Piper, were easy to root for and it was easy to see their strong connection. I love the entire town of of Owl Creek and I want to read more from this world. It was so heartwarming to read a Christ centered small town romance and it has definitely kick started my holiday spirit. I also appreciated the fact that while this is a Christian story it did not come off as preachy which is what I was worried about. Everything felt very natural and organic and that is a real testament to Calhoune’s writing. Another aspect of this story that I really enjoyed was all the food. I am a sucker for any book that is based on food and this one had me salivating. I have a huge craving for pie (especially eggnog cream!) and I cannot wait for all the holiday goodies. I think the conflict that keeps Braden and Piper apart was believable and I thought that the resolution of everything was well done. As you can tell, I just really enjoyed everything about this sweet romance and it is definitely a refreshing break from my usual types of romances. Also, the Alaska setting is stunning and it is on my bucket list to visit!

Author bio: Belle Calhoune lives in Connecticut with her college sweetheart husband and two daughters. After a thirteen year career as a Federal Investigator, she chose to pursue a writing career. An avid lover of romance novels since she was a teen, she enjoys writing love stories and reading them. She loves spending summers in beautiful Cape Cod and traveling to new places. Excerpt

Excerpt, ALASKAN CHRISTMAS REDEMPTION by Belle Calhoune

Braden watched as Piper’s eyes widened with surprise. The shock on her face made him want to laugh out loud, but he knew the situation was far from humorous. The Snowy Owl Diner was at stake, and although he’d agreed to provide his assistance, he wasn’t sure if Piper even believed it could be saved. From this point forward, she would have to tell him everything about her situation. He would have to look over the books with a fine-tooth comb. If he was truly going to help her, he needed to understand exactly what she was facing. The good, the bad and the ugly.

“A-are you serious?” she asked, sputtering.

“Completely,” he said, a smile twitching at the corners of his mouth. “Whatever you need is what I’ll do.”

She pressed a hand to her chest. “You will? Really? You were so decisive last night. What made you change your mind?”

Braden paused before answering. “Because I owe you, Piper.”

“For what?” she asked, confusion radiating from her eyes.

Telling her the truth wasn’t an option. She wouldn’t want to know why he would forever be indebted to her. “For a million different things. You’ve always being in my corner. How could I say no to you when you’ve always said yes to me? No matter what trouble I got into or the problems I laid at your feet, you always jumped in to help me. There’s no way I could do any less for you.”

Tears slid down Piper’s face, and she made no attempt to wipe them away. She bowed her head, and he could see her lips moving. When she raised her head back up, Braden saw pure happiness emanating from her eyes.

“Thank you, Braden. I’m so grateful that you changed your mind. I know it’s complicated, but in my heart I truly feel that I was meant to carry on Daddy’s legacy. I just can’t imagine my life without this place in it. I’m willing to do just about anything to save it.”

Braden couldn’t envision Piper losing ownership of the restaurant either. It would be agonizing for her. Not to mention Trudy and Hank. They were all invested in it. The townsfolk would be both saddened and upset. Piper would be the subject of endless gossip about the circumstances of her losing ownership of the Snowy Owl. She wouldn’t be able to bear it if the townsfolk discovered that the diner had been struggling since before her father’s death.

He knew Jack’s reputation was important to Piper. People would sympathize with her as well, but he knew she would be inconsolable. If there was even a small chance of them reversing things, he wanted to give it his all. It would be his penance for shaving years off Jack’s life. If it hadn’t been for him, Jack might be here today, doing everything he could to boost the restaurant and spreading his effortless charm throughout the establishment.

“We should meet up so you can give me an opportunity to look over the books and all of your monthly bills along with revenue. That’ll at least give me a snapshot of what’s been going on.”

Piper made a sad face. “Sure thing. I hope you see something in there that I missed, but I crunched the numbers over and over again. It’s not looking good.”

“We have to look at all your options. You might need a lawyer or a consultant.”

She shook her head. “I don’t have money for an attorney. It’s a lack of money that’s gotten me into this situation in the first place.” Piper let out a frustrated groan.

“Why don’t we meet this evening to try and sort some of this out?” he suggested. From what he’d initially gathered, they had only a short window of time to get things dealt with before everything imploded. That needed to be prevented at all costs.

“That sounds good. Come by after I close up,” she told him. “I have to get back out there, but I’m so thrilled you changed your mind about helping me.” She flashed him a smile. “In case you didn’t realize it, I’m super grateful.”

From the New York Times bestselling author of Factory Man and Truevine, a work of deep reporting that reveals, as never before, the tragedy of America’s opioid crisis, exposing those responsible for its creation and the wholly impotent response to it.
In this masterful work, Beth Macy takes us into an epicenter of America’s twenty-plus year struggle with opioid addiction. Dopesick is the first book to chart the tragic spread of prescription and street drugs from distressed small communities in Central Appalachia to wealthy suburbs, disparate cities, and once-idyllic farm towns, a trajectory that explains how the crisis persisted for so long and became so entrenched.
Beginning with a single dealer who lands in a small Virginia town to work at a chicken-processing plant and sets about turning high school football stars into heroin-overdose statistics, Macy sets out to answer a grieving mother’s question -why her only son died – and comes away with a harrowing story of greed and need. From the introduction of OxyContin in 1996, Macy parses how America embraced a medical culture where overtreatment with painkillers became the norm. In some of the same distressed communities featured in her bestselling book Factory Man, the unemployed use painkillers both to numb the pain of joblessness and pay their bills while under-challenged teens across America trade pills in cul-de-sacs, and even high-school standouts fall prey to prostitution, jail, and death.
Through unsparing, yet deeply human portraits of the families and first responders struggling to ameliorate the epidemic, each facet of the crisis comes into focus. In these politically fragmented times, Beth Macy shows, perhaps the only thing that unites Americans across geographic and class lines is opioid drug abuse. In a country already unable to provide basic healthcare for all, Dopesick exposes the pioneering spirit necessary for those facing addiction to build better futures for themselves and others.

It was always him. The one I shouldn’t want, shouldn’t crave, the one who could destroy my carefully built life.

Hagen Lykaios was the essence of sin, indulgence, and danger – everything I knew to avoid.

All it took was one unexpected touch, and he consumed me, left me begging, needy, and hungry for more.

He said if I entered his world he would corrupt me, own me, and change all that I had ever known…and you know what? I went anyway.

I need a woman to help me shut up my big Greek family.

And my new intern is perfect for the job, though pretending to have a relationship with her might be a little taboo.

Good thing I’m in charge.

Being a self-made billionaire, I haven’t spent much time looking for love.

None actually.

Lucky for me, it’s fallen right into my lap.

This pretty American girl has zero sense of direction, but a good heart and a sexy smile.

I’ve always been smitten by a woman that needs rescuing, or so it seems.

Something tells me that she might be more than I bargained for.

Either way, I just need her to fake it for me until it appears real.

Funny how real it quickly becomes.

Inside Westmont Prep, the game hasn’t ended. It thrives on secrecy and silence. And for its players, there may be no way to win—or to survive. . . .

Buzzwordathon TBR

I am hoping that the Buzzword readathon will jumpstart my reading since I have stalled out again. I also want to participate even if I only manage to read one thing since it is seemingly the last time that Lala will be hosting it. From what I understand, the buzzwordathon will become a monthly book group on Goodreads next year where there will be a new word for every month. Which sounds like a fun way to incorporate a book onto a TBR. Or I guess it could also be fun to try to only read that month’s word for the whole year!

This weeklong readathon starts on September 21- September 27. And the word for this round is NIGHT. I have a whole list of books that I own that would work but today I am only going to be sharing a few ranked in order of what I most want to read. Also, here is the announcement video if you want to learn more about this readathon.
