This weekly meme is hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words and all you need to do to participate is answer the following questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

I’m not usually reading so many books at once but I’ve been having a hard time concentrating on reading lately so I have been bouncing between these books.

I am on part five of The Priory of the Orange Tree and I feel like we are finally seeing all the different storylines start to come together. I have no idea what is going to happen in the next three hundred pages but I know I will be on the edge of my seat.

I started reading Sawkill Girls yesterday and I am in love. I thought this was just a magical realism mystery story, which it is, but it is also a feminist horror novel and I am here for it. I’m just over half done and again I have no idea where the story is going to go but I am excited to see it all unfold.

All Boys Aren’t Blue is a book I started for the 48 hr Blackathon and it is a powerful, moving memoir about being black and being gay. I am neither and yet I find myself relating to parts of this book so much. It may be because I am a year or two younger than the author so a lot of the pop culture and events also mirror the time of life I was in too. I’m not really sure why, but while reading about George Johnson’s pain and trauma I am being reminded of my own and so I haven’t been able to read this book for long periods of time. However, that is just a testament to how incredible this book is and I have learned a lot about black and gay culture from it.

I also picked up Homie for the Blackathon but I made the bold decision to read it as an audiobook. I say bold because I maybe listen to one or two audiobooks a year. I love a poetry collection that is read by the author because no one can read their words the way they can. And wow is this book of poetry stunning. Danez Smith has such a masterful way with words and I am loving every single second of listening to him. I have written down so many quotes and I’m only like 40 minutes into the hour and half audiobook. There is language that I don’t want my kids to hear (mostly my three year old who repeats everything these days!) so I listen to it in bursts.

What is a book you have recently finished?

These are the books that I finished this week. It took me like a week to read The Guest List and I thought I was going to love it but it wasn’t quite as amazing as I was wanting it to be. I will hopefully have a full review up for it soon. Here is my review for Just Like That:

Blog Tour: Just Like That by Cole McCade

What do you think you’ll read next?

Besides finishing up the books I am currently reading this will be the next one that I read. I need to read this for my historical fiction TBR pick plus for a blog tour post that goes up at the end of next month.
