I recently went through my Netgalley books and I found a few older books that I have read but never reviewed. So my list has gotten a little longer but I’m still hoping to be all caught up in another post or two.

I have family that lives in the Central Valley of California so I thought the setting of this book was so fun. I also love when a foodie cozy mystery describes the food so well that I start craving what is being described. There is also an unexpected friends to lover romance in this book that was so sweet. I did think the mystery dragged a bit but overall I thought this was a fun time. Star Crossed Egg Tarts is the second book in this series and I definitely want to continue on with this series.

I had such a great time reading The Escape Game. This book is about an escape room reality show where teams compete against each other over the course of a few weeks. The previous season ended with a shocking murder and so the stakes are high to make this new season successful. The book is told through the POV of one team as they navigate the games, the dynamics of their team, their family life and all the drama surrounding the show and the other contestants.. As you can tell, there is a lot going on in this story which I don’t think was completely necessary and definitely affected the pacing of this book. Also, I was surprised that this book is the first in a series because I think it makes a great standalone. However, I will probably read the next installment.

I read Daphne almost three years ago and I remember feeling disappointed by it. Daphne is a coming of age paranormal horror that felt long given its just over 250 page length. It is receptive and would perhaps have been better as a short story. The actual horror of Daphne, a girl who has became a scary story told at sleepovers after she died in a mysterious way, was great and I enjoyed when the story focused on that.

This is another book that I read awhile ago (two in this case) but I flew through this book in a couple of days. This was a great meta mystery that follows a woman in a library who is writing a novel and using the fellow patrons as inspiration for characters in her novel. They are all startled when they hear a woman dying and they all come together to figure out what happened. This was a great take on a mystery since it becomes clear that one of the group is the killer. I enjoyed all the reveals and have been meaning to read more Gentill since. She has such intriguing premises maybe because she used to be a lawyer.
