Boyfriend Material is a truly funny rom com that has a lot of heart. Luc’s absent dad is a beloved celebrity in England which means that unfortunately Luc lives his life in the spotlight. When another comprising photo is released of him he is forced to rehab his image to keep his job. A friend sets him up with reliable Oliver who is seemingly the perfect person. Oliver is also in need of a date for an upcoming event in his life so they strike up a deal to enter into a fake relationship with one another. But fake dating starts to feel like real dating and the chemistry between the two of them is undeniable.
I absolutely adored this romance. Luc is a lovable mess and part of what makes this book so heartwarming is watching him evolve through the events of the book. And Oliver is so serious and it was wonderful to see Luc bring out his lighter side. And the relationship between the two of them is absolutely swoon worthy. There are so many incredible moments between the two of them and it was such a great pay off to see their walls come crumbling down.
Both our heroes have complicated family dynamics that can be tough to read. They each have at least one parent that is truly awful and there is also mentions of disordered eating so this book does have some heavy moments to it. And of course they both encounter homophobia, which in more than one case is almost normalized. It is an unfortunate reality and I appreciate that Hall included it. However, the darker elements of this story are well balanced out by both the humor and the sweetness of the romance.
If you are looking for a romance that will give you all the feels and also make you laugh out loud than this is a book that you need to pick up. I read this book awhile ago and I’m still swooning over Luc and Oliver.
