Mini Netgalley Reviews #1

I recently took a look at the numerous books on my Netgalley shelf and realized that I have actually read quite a few of them but for some reason or another I never wrote a review for them. Since I read some of them awhile ago I thought it would be better to just give a few sentence review of the book since I can easily recall the impression the book left on me but I am short on the details.

I actually remember this book vividly but since everyone knows about this book I don’t feel like a full review would add anything. This is a top tier YA mystery that is perfect for any lover of the genre regardless of the age classification. I love Pip so much and the school project element of the story was fun and I loved how the mystery gradually unfolded. While I wasn’t a huge fan of the third book in the series I do think the first book is a worthwhile standalone if you choose to not continue the series.

C.J. Tudor is a hit or miss author for me and thankfully this was a hit. I gave this short story collection four stars and really enjoyed the mix of genres it contained. One of my favorite parts was the introduction Tudor gave to each story letting the reader know her inspiration. I am a lover of weird fiction which I seem to remember this falling into so please bear that in mind.

The Turnout is a dark and twisted atmospheric thriller about two sisters whose lives are interwoven with each other as they run their deceased parents’ dance school together. When one of the sisters decides to carve out some independence for herself things start to slowly unravel for them. This is another book that I would put into the weird category and it does have a lot of content warnings. I gave it four stars.

Unfortunately nothing about this book worked for me. The premise of having a support group of fairy tale characters set in modern times sounded so great. However I found most of the characters and their back stories lacking or even boring. And I feel like this author misunderstood what makes a horror book and instead just tried to gross out the reader.
