Your Knife, My Heart is the first in a prequel duology set in Moronova’s Dark Forces world. It is a dark and gritty military trial romance with two trained killers. I absolutely adored Cameron and Emery and watching their walls fall down as they learn to trust each other was so rewarding.
The Dark Forces world is brutal and this one was especially horrific compared to the first book in the series, Leave Me Behind. Granted this is set before that one so it makes sense but this one has the addition of experimental drugs that Cameron is a guinea pig for and the effects it has on him are cruel. Cameron also has a problem of killing all his partners so he is being forced to go through the Under Trials aka a sadistic boot camp again. And if he can make it through, along with not killing his new partner, Emery, they will get a place in the Dark Forces and a chance to earn their freedom.
Emery is from an infamous crime family where she was raised to be a cold blooded killer. The Dark Forces found her in prison where she thought she was going to spend the rest of her life before execution and while she can’t turn them down she is also hopeful for the first time that she actually has a chance to earn her freedom. However, not only does she have Cameron as a partner with all of his baggage, she is also dropped into the Under Trials with only a few weeks left.
This book was so immersive and I was constantly on edge waiting for the next shocking thing to happen. It also leaves on a cliff hanger so I’m so relieved the next book comes out in December. I desperately need to know what is going to happen next and how Emery and Cameron’s story ends.
