Mini Reviews #2

I’m back today to do some quick reviews of books that I read back in February. This morning I finally got around to making a list of all the books I read in March and I was shocked to realize it was 24! So there will be quite a few more of these posts to come.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes was a surprisingly fun and interesting memoir about a woman’s relationship with death and her job working in a crematory. I listened to the audiobook that was narrated by the author which I highly recommend. I also love all the facts and information about death and death rituals that she sprinkled throughout her story. 5 stars.

I was expecting to be blown away by The Luminaries but I think it was a bit too ambitious for Catton because the story started unraveling around the fifty percent mark. I also think the concept of having the zodiac elements help tell the story was interesting but ultimately led to nothing of substance. I still gave it four stars because I adore the way Catton writes characters and I love when a story slowly unravels itself.

So far this year I have read volumes 3-5 of the Something is Killing Your Children graphic novel series. This a well done supernatural horror story that follows Erica Slaughter who is one of my favorite bad ass woman characters. I’ve given every volume in this series five stars and I’m a bit sad that I only have two more left.

Starling House is hands down one of my all time favorite books. I have never liked Alix Harrow’s novels so I was not expecting this one to hit so hard for me. I love the writing, the characters, the setting, the story, the pacing, the themes, and you get the picture.

I also adored What Feasts at Night (aka pretty much anything T. Kingfisher writes is a five star read for me) even though it is a bit of a slower story. Kingfisher is the queen of atmosphere and telling a deliciously creepy yet whimsical little story.

I gave Feed Them Silence four stars and thought it was a pretty well rounded story for only being like 100 pages. This is a sci fi horror which I haven’t read too many of but am definitely intrigued to read more in the future.
