72 hours in the reading nook wrap up

This past weekend was the 72 hours in the reading nook readathon hosted by CoverswithCassidy and her friends on Youtube. They created two spinner wheels of prompts one for in your comfort zone reads and one for out of your comfort zone reads. I managed to read 6 things and start another which is pretty awesome considering how nice the weekend was and all the time we spent outside. Well, some of it was spent reading πŸ™‚

Day 1: In your comfort zone

Least used format: I chose Hoopla

This was a prequel story that I really enjoyed. We learned the main character’s origin story as well as more about the organization she works for. I really enjoy this horror graphic novel series and I think I only have a few more to go before I’ve finished the series.

I was already 20 pages into this but I figured it would still count. This is a reread and I think I loved it more the second time around. This is a beautiful, whimsical and fresh take on the traditional Sleeping Beauty tale. I also love how Kingfisher deals with the idea of beauty and family. Also, Toadling is one of my favorite characters and I would love to read this book again and again.

New to you author

I decided to be smart with this choice and I went with a book on my Netgalley shelf that comes out today. And I’m so happy that I did because I cannot believe how fast I flew through this book. I was addicted to finding out what was going to happen next. This book is about a woman who was kidnapped ten years ago by a crazed woman who kidnaps people and forces them to act out scenes from her childhood. Brooke has lasted the longest but when the rules suddenly change her survival is more at risk than ever. This thriller really takes you on a ride but it is the kind where you need to leave reality at the door. As the book goes on it becomes more and more outlandish which only added to the fun for me. Sometimes when a thriller is so out there it helps me distance from the harsh subject matter and lets me just enjoy the story. This is a fun popcorn thriller that is the perfect one or two sitting read.

Day 2: Out of my comfort zone

The only thing I could think of for out of my comfort zone was middle grade, non fiction or westerns but I only ended up only choosing middle grade. My oldest read this book ages ago and thought I would like it so it’s been sitting on my shelves for waiting for me. I gave this book four stars and I would have absolutely loved it if I read it as a kid. This is the perfect book for fans of Goosebumps and Fear Street which is probably why they had R.L. Stine blurb the front cover. I actually had to flip through a few pages at the end without reading them because I have a fear of a certain bug that starts with a C and I’m so grossed out even typing this but they fought a large version of it at the end. Ugh. This is a very well done horror middle grade with a lot of really great themes for kids of that age.

More than 300 pages

This is a book off of my 24 to read in 2024 list and I really enjoyed this. It has the whimsical fairy tale like feeling which I enjoy and had a lot of lovable characters. My only critique of this book is that it was overly long and a bit repetitive. It is a very slow moving story which is interesting that it is a middle grade and I wonder how many kids are the ones rating this book so high versus adults.

Day 3: In my comfort zone

I was looking for a quick read on the last day of the readathon so I went with a quick smutty novella that I’ve had on my kindle since 2020. I didn’t have high expectations for this but I was surprised at much I enjoyed it. Katee Robert really leaned into the ridiculousness of the premise and I appreciated that. The amount the word daddy was thrown around in so few pages was a bit grating but I always like when smutty books also talk about feelings which this book did. Katee Robert is the queen of smut and this book is further proof of that.

Most used format-Kindle

This is a recent release and I have been dying to pick it up. Unfortunately I’m not absolutely loving it (hence why I haven’t picked it up since Sunday) and it feels like its dragging even though it’s only 149 pages. This is a book about a guy that went to school with the now hot actress of a heavily inspired Schitt’s Creek type show and they accidentally bump into each other one day. So far they have gone on a few dates but they don’t have any chemistry and I don’t feel strongly about the characters either. I’ve already preordered the second book in this series and I have my fingers crossed that I will like it a lot more. Based on the premise I think I will at least feel the chemistry between the characters.
