This weekly meme is hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words and all you need to do to participate is answer the following three questions:

What are you currently reading?

I am so happy to report that I love Starling House. It is everything that I love in Harrow’s writing and I had to break out the highlighter because there are so many lines that I’m obsessed with. I also love the story and the gothic vibes. I’m about 60 pages in and I’m enjoying watching the story unfold before me. I’m still not sure where it’s going but I can’t wait to find out.

I also DNF’d both Claire Mackintosh books that I had received review copies of. Her memoir deals with the very hard topic of grief and infant loss so if I’m going to put myself through that I have to connect with the writing and unfortunately I didn’t. I quickly DNF’d her book A Game of Lies because the first few pages had to do with farting and it was just an off putting and bizarre way to start a novel. I have come to the conclusion that while I may have previously enjoyed her work, Claire Mackintosh’s new stuff is just not for me. All of that to say I needed a new book to fulfill the prompt of read a UK author so I went with a collection of short stories by C.J. Tudor, A Sliver of Darkness. And so far I’m loving it. She has a little intro to each story and so far they are all unique and very engaging. I received a review copy of it a few years ago and I’m kicking myself for not picking it up sooner.

What have you recently finished?

I highly recommend all these reads even though I see the internet seems to hate House of Flame and Shadow 🙂 It sucks when a highly anticipated book doesn’t work out though so I understand the anger. Although most of the issues people have with this book I had with House of Sky and Breath which is kind of funny. As always I have reviews planned for Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and The Luminaires but it’s just a matter of when I get to it.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Alison from Alison on a Book Break hosts monthly stop and go buddy reads and this is the one for February. Our first stop is February 10 (I think) so I need to read the first stop of this before then. Each book we read has been split into random sections which we read to and then share our thoughts. It’s been really fun so far and I’ve been wanting to read this book for so long so I’m excited to finally have an excuse to push me to it.

No light. No air. No escape.
Hundreds of feet beneath the ocean’s surface, a graveyard waits…

Years ago, the SS Arcadia vanished without a trace during a routine voyage. Though a strange, garbled emergency message was broadcast, neither the ship nor any of its crew could be found. Sixty years later, its wreck has finally been discovered more than three hundred miles from its intended course…a silent graveyard deep beneath the ocean’s surface, eagerly waiting for the first sign of life.

Cove and her dive team have been granted permission to explore the Arcadia’s rusting hull. Their purpose is straightforward: examine the wreck, film everything, and, if possible, uncover how and why the supposedly unsinkable ship vanished.

But the Arcadia has not yet had its fill of death, and something dark and hungry watches from below. With limited oxygen and the ship slowly closing in around them, Cove and her team will have to fight their way free of the unspeakable horror now desperate to claim them.

Because once they’re trapped beneath the ocean’s waves, there’s no going back.
