WWW Wednesday 3.10.21

This weekly meme is hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Worlds and all you need to do to participate is answer the following three questions:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What have you recently finished?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

My buddy reading group is reading Crescent City this week and while I’m kind of going at my own pace I am enjoying it. This also happens to be my very first Sarah J. Maas book and I don’t know what about this one finally piqued my interest but it is nothing like what I thought it would. There is a lot of world building right now and I’m not entirely sure exactly how the structure of the world works since there are so many fantastical creatures but I trust that the journey (816 pages!) will be worth it. I knew going into it that a lot of people say the first few hundred pages are slow which surprises me because I feel like a lot has happened and I’m eager to see where it is all going to go.

What have you recently finished reading?

Since my last WWW post I have finished five books and DNF’d one of them. The most shocking part is that 4 of them have all happened this week. Finally having a plan to treat my autoimmune disease has really helped with my concentration. I have been missing reading the past few months so I really dove back into it. Plus this month I am mostly concentrating on my first love, mysteries, so it is easy for me to get lost in the stories.

Her Dark Lies by J.T. Ellison– 4.5/5

The Jigsaw Man by Nadine Matheson– 3.5/5 (my review will be up next Tuesday)

Changeling by Matt Wesolowski– 5/5 (One of my favorite reads of the year. I will hopefully have my review up for this soon.)

Snow Place to Die by Mary Daheim- DNF @ 20% I knew going in that that was going to be outdated because it came out in 1998 but it has my favorite locked room mystery trope so I wanted to give it a try. It was definitely outdated but it didn’t become problematic until the body of a person who had been missing for a year was found and the excuse for why no one was worried when he went missing was because he was gay and would follow a “special star” that I decided that was enough for me. I was 12 in 1998 so I have no real grasp of whether that was considered ok back then but I do know that there are so many amazing books that I want to read that if a book is making me uncomfortable then I should just move on.

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman– 5/5

Dear Child by Romy Hausmann– 5/5 (This is a dark and brutal version of the book Room. I hope to have a review up for this soon as well.)

What do you think you’ll read next?

I want to keep up my reading momentum so I think I will pick this up in the next day or two so I don’t get bogged down with Crescent City. I hear amazing things about this middle grade book so I think it will be a nice refresher plus it is a mystery so I can keep up with reading all the mysteries this March.

  1. I want to read the Sarah J Maas book. The first book I picked up by her was ACOTAR and I just recently read ACOMAF and I’m really enjoying the series so far. I’m currently reading Truthwitch by Susan Dennard and I’m struggling a little bit with it. I’m also reading Journey to Territory M by L.J. Epps but I’m not to far into it right now so I don’t have an opinion on it yet.

    1. I’m surprised by how much I am loving Crescent City. It is such a huge tome and I’m already about half way through it with only a few days of reading. I really want to go back and read the whole ACOTAR series and see if I like those just as much. I heard her writing as gotten a lot better but I love how fun and complex the world is in Crescent City so if ACOTAR is the same thing I think I would like it a lot. I keep seeing Truthwitch come up lately but I wasn’t sure if it was something that I would enjoy. Knowing that you aren’t that into probably means I should just pass on it! 😀

      1. Yeah tomes are pretty intimidating so when they are good it makes them worth it. I have her Throne of Glass series that I need to read as well. I kind of feel like I’m going to love everything I read by her. I haven’t picked Truthwitch back up yet I’ve been reading other books. I’m hoping that it will start to work for me but we shall see.
